The ongoing outbreak of a respiratory illness first identified in China has led to the largest quarantine in human history. This is an evolving situation and additional time is needed to adequately assess the threat. There are tens of thousands of people infected with the virus as the official number of cases does not capture unprocessed tests, does not capture the many people who haven’t shown symptoms, does not capture the people who haven’t accessed official health reporting channels, and the likely under-reporting or misdiagnosis of cases. Reported illnesses have ranged from infected people with little to no symptoms to people being severely ill and dying. Some person-to-person spread of this virus outside China has been detected, including here in Vietnam. The risk from these outbreaks depends on characteristics of the virus, including whether and how well it spreads between people, the severity of resulting illness, and the medical or other measures available to control the impact of the virus.
Will the coronavirus be contained, or will its human and economic costs rise sharply in the weeks and months ahead? Most importantly, how serious is this for AmCham members living in Vietnam? Join us for a special Lunch ‘n’ Learn session on Wednesday with science and health experts from the US government to hear about the virus impact on you, your family, your team, and your business.
