Sumito Ishii was appointed Managing Director of General Motors Vietnam effective August 1, 2016.
Ishii began his GM career in 1996 to join Saturn project in Japan. In 1998, Ishii was assigned to new product development programs at the Headquarters in General Motors Corporation, Michigan, in the US. During the period, Ishii also worked on strategic partnership projects with other automotive manufactures.
Since returning to Japan in 2003, Ishii held various important positions including service engineering and type approval before being appointed to the Aftersales Director in 2005.
In January 2010, Ishii was appointed as Managing Director of GM Japan Ltd., becoming the first native Japanese president since 2000 when General Motors started import operations in Japan. Ishii led the organization to promote Chevorlet and Cadillac brands in Japan until July 2016.
Ishii was a member of AmCham in Japan. He led and acted as key leader in Automotive Committee for 7 years in Tokyo. As soon as Ishii arrived in Hanoi this August, he started the current governor role.
Before joining GM, Ishii worked at Toyota Motor Corporation where he had served in dealer support and new vehicle launch readiness in Aftersales.
Ishii is married and they have three children. He enjoys playing baseball, softball and golf.
