Comprehensive Strategic Partners
A View from the U.S. Ambassador

It has been an eventful month for the US-Vietnam relationship. President Biden visited Hanoi to reinforce the United States’ commitment to a strong, prosperous, resilient, and independent Vietnam. During the visit, the two countries agreed to upgrade their relationship to a “comprehensive strategic partnership”, a symbolic but significant diplomatic status that puts the US on par with China, Russia, India and South Korea. A week later, Prime Minister Chinh and a large team of senior Vietnamese officials visited San Francisco, Washington DC, and New York City to push for increased trade and investment. US Ambassador Marc Knapper was at the center of it all, participating in both visits and working hard to deepen the friendship between our two countries. The Ambassador has just returned from the US trip and will share his thoughts on the newly upgraded relationship and what it means for AmCham members at a special luncheon this Thursday.

He is a recipient of the Secretary of State’s Distinguished Service Award, the nation’s highest diplomatic honor. Ambassador Knapper also received a Presidential Meritorious Service Award and the Department of State’s Linguist of the Year Award.
