Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP established its Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City offices in 1994 and was one of the first international law firms to open in Vietnam.
Our Vietnam offices are headed by a US-qualified lawyer, Tony Foster. He was the Chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hanoi from 2002-2003 and served on its board continuously from 1995 to 2018. Tony Foster is also the Chairman of the Infrastructure Committee of the Vietnam Business Forum. Tony Foster has lived and practiced permanently in Vietnam since 1994. Eric Johnson, also a US-qualified lawyer, has served on the Board of Amcham Hanoi since being elected in 2018.
Our team comprises Vietnamese lawyers (led by Bui Thanh Tien, the head of HCMC office, who received his LLM from the University of Arizona, courtesy of a Fulbright scholarship) and foreign lawyers (including U.S. and U.K qualified lawyers) who combine local legal and practical knowledge with international quality standards. The senior foreign and Vietnamese members of the team have practiced law together for well over a decade, and have successfully assisted foreign clients in many landmark transactions in Vietnam. Freshfields was the first foreign law firm to be awarded a medal by the Minister of Justice for services to the development of Vietnam’s legal system, and has been consistently at the top of all legal surveys since such surveys began in 1997.
Our practice focuses on the following sectors:
• Corporate including M&A, private equity, inward investment and privatization
• Capital markets
• Banking, finance and restructuring
• Real estate
• Compliance and dispute resolution
